Do You Have a Headache? Go to the dentist

Headaches
Do you or someone you know get migraines or headaches that last a long time? Most of the time, these folks have seen a lot of different doctors and gotten little or no help. They are getting treatment for their symptoms, but the problem is still there. Have you ever considered about going to the dentist for a headache? Neuromuscular dentistry is used to treat a lot of different diseases, and this is just one of them. One of the latest technologies in dentistry today is neuromuscular dentistry. It is distinct from traditional dentistry because it looks at how the muscles in the jaw and neck work with the teeth.

Neuromuscular dentistry knows that the muscles that move the jaw have to be in a comfortable, relaxed position so they don't get in the way of the teeth and jaw joint. In other words, we need to have "happy muscles." When we don't have these "happy muscles," we can get headaches, loose teeth, root abfractions, and other problems. Pain, clicking, or popping in the jaw joints, Pain in the shoulders, neck, and back, Numbness in the arms and fingers, facial pain that isn't particular, trouble swallowing, teeth that are sensitive to hot or cold, Teeth that are too close together and gums that are going back Tinnitus or ear congestion. For instance, a person could have migraine headaches and no other symptoms, yet they could still have a neuromuscular dental condition.

Neuromuscular dentistry uses a variety of tools to help people attain to a state of "Happy Muscles." First, we need to locate a position that is most pleasant for the patient when they are resting. This is the position that lets the muscles rest, no matter where the teeth are. The Myo-monitor is a tool that helps the patient's muscles relax. This is a low-frequency T.E.N.S. (Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation) unit. The Myo-monitor sends a very weak electrical impulse to the Trigeminal Nerve and the Facial Nerve.

This TENSing does three things. First, it gets rid of waste metabolites and lactic acid from the strained muscles. Second, it makes the blood flow to the muscle faster, which gives the muscle more oxygen, glucose, and energy. Lastly, it lets the jaw relax into the right position. Tensing normally takes 45 to 60 minutes, depending on how bad the patient's symptoms are and how stiff their muscles are. We may use an EMG machine to find out how tight the muscles are. Before tensing, the EMG displays how active the muscles are. The muscles are significantly "happier" and there is far less activity after TENSing.

After TENSing and identifying the best position for the jaw that makes the muscles happy, we create an orthotic to retain the muscles in that position. It's very crucial to keep the muscles in this posture because it keeps them at their proper length, which stops them from going into spasm. We want to get back to "Happy Muscles" again.

The orthotic helps the muscles repair, the pain go away or go away completely, and the jaw joint heal. People normally wear the orthotic for one to three months to make sure their bite is right and their symptoms go away. We decide on Phase 2 of treatment once the patient is clear of symptoms. The patient might choose to wear the orthotic for the rest of their life, get orthodontic work done to move their teeth into the right position, have their teeth fixed, or change their teeth to fit their ideal bite.

Recently, three patients came to me seeking help with their migraines.

Alan is a 68-year-old man who has had migraines 6 to 10 times a month for the past 25 years. "I had seen every kind of doctor in the country, even the Mayo clinic." Nothing could stop the headaches, so I merely took medicines to ease the discomfort. I had to take drugs with me everywhere I went at one point. Alan had neuromuscular dentistry done on him, and now he seldom ever has headaches. "I'm quite delighted with how my treatment turned out. I almost never experience headaches anymore, therefore I don't need to take any headache medicine. After all these years, what a relief.

Barbara is a mother of three who is 43 years old and has had headaches and a stiff neck for the last seven years. Over the years, she had seen several doctors, specialists, chiropractors, and acupuncturists. "Nobody could stop the headaches, and I haven't been able to move my neck completely for a year and a half." I couldn't go to my 10-year-old's birthday celebration because I had a migraine. Barbara came to our clinic with a bad headache and a knot the size of a golf ball in her neck muscles. We put the TENS unit on her for an hour. "I couldn't believe it." My headache was gone, the knot in my neck was gone, and for the first time in a year and a half, I could rotate my neck from side to side. Barbara hasn't had much pain in the last three months, and she's really delighted with how her orthotics have worked. "I can't wait to get my mouth fixed."

Deaun used to get migraines every now and again till two years ago. "I was at a comedy club with my spouse when I started to feel a migraine coming on. We left the club, went home, and I went to sleep. For the last two years, the migraines have been pretty much all the time. Deaun had seen many doctors, but none of them could help. "They kept telling me that all they could do was give me painkillers." After that, I learned about Dr. Cohen. My spouse didn't think anything would work, but I truly wanted to give neuromuscular dentistry a try. I'm quite happy that I did. I used to get headaches all the time, but now I only get one every six weeks. Even my husband, who is usually skeptical, is shocked at how much better I feel. "I'm very strict about wearing my orthotic and feel great."
